“自業自得”
“You reap what you sow”

A traditional Japanese saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This classic four-character idiom expresses the fundamental law of cause and effect. Literally translating as one's own work, one's own reward, it means that whatever happens to you is the direct result of your own past deeds. While modern usage often carries a cautionary tone, it serves as a timeless reminder that personal actions shape future outcomes.

Originating in ancient Buddhist terminology, this phrase entered Japanese usage to describe karma. It evolved into a classic four-character idiom, widely taught and recognised across Japan as a fundamental moral lesson on personal accountability.

People often hang this print in a home office or study as a daily reminder of self-reliance.
