“You, neighbor God, if sometimes in the long night I disturb you with hard knocking.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke addresses God as a close neighbour rather than a distant deity. The hard knocking in the night represents human yearning, doubt, or spiritual seeking during quiet hours. It portrays prayer not as a formal ritual, but as an intimate, urgent attempt to reach a divine presence living just on the other side of a thin, shared wall.

This line opens a poem in Rainer Maria Rilke's collection *Das Stunden-Buch* (*The Book of Hours*), written between 1899 and 1903. The work captures his personal, non-traditional exploration of faith, solitude, and the divine.

People often place this print beside the bed or in a quiet study for late-night personal reflection.
