You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you… — Eleanor Roosevelt | Printable Wall Art

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.”

Words by Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) — U.S. First Lady, diplomat, and activist.

About this quote

This quote suggests that true resilience is not an inherent trait, but a quality built through direct confrontation with difficulty. When we choose to face a frightening situation rather than retreat, we prove to ourselves that we can endure it. Each moment of dread overcome leaves us better prepared, stronger, and more self-assured for the next challenge that comes our way.

It appears in Eleanor Roosevelt's 1960 book, You Learn by Living. Drawing on her extensive public life and personal trials, she wrote the passage to offer practical wisdom on overcoming dread and self-doubt.

People often display this print in a home office or study to offer steady encouragement during difficult tasks.
