You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist. — Indira Gandhi | Printable Wall Art

“You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.”

Words by Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) — Prime Minister of India.

About this quote

This quotation suggests that genuine peace, compromise, and cooperation are impossible while one party remains hostile or defensive. A clenched fist symbolises anger, aggression, and a refusal to negotiate, whereas an open hand represents goodwill and trust. To resolve conflicts and build meaningful relationships, both sides must first let go of their grievances and approach the dialogue with an open mind.

Attributed to Indira Gandhi, India's first female prime minister, this remark reflects her pragmatic approach to diplomacy and statecraft during a tense period of twentieth-century international relations. It remains a well-known maxim regarding conflict resolution.

People often hang this print in a study or boardroom to encourage peaceful negotiation and constructive dialogue.
