“Ohne Hast, aber ohne Rast.”
“Without haste, but without rest.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This line encourages steady, continuous effort rather than impulsive bursts of energy followed by exhaustion. It suggests that real progress comes from calm perseverance, where one moves deliberately towards a goal without unnecessary panic or idle pauses. By balancing patience with purpose, a person achieves long-term success through quiet consistency.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe adopted this motto in his later years, incorporating it into his collection of short rhyming poems, Zahme Xenien. It reflects the Weimar Classicism ideal of disciplined self-improvement and harmonious, lifelong work.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage steady focus during work.
