About this quote

This teaching encapsulates the Confucian principle of benevolence. It suggests that personal progress and fulfilment are tied to the growth of others. To establish oneself in character or status, one should enable others to do the same. Success is not a private pursuit; true achievement comes from uplifting those around you and contributing to a supportive community.

This passage comes from the Analects, a collection of sayings attributed to Confucius and compiled by his disciples after his death. It forms part of a conversation explaining the central virtue of benevolence, known as ren.

People often hang this in a home office or study as a daily reminder of ethical leadership and community.
