La sapienza è figliola della sperienza. — Leonardo da Vinci | Printable Wall Art

“La sapienza è figliola della sperienza.”
“Wisdom is the daughter of experience.”

Words by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) — Renaissance polymath, painter, and inventor.

About this quote

True understanding comes from practical observation and direct engagement with the world, rather than relying solely on abstract theory or second-hand knowledge. Leonardo believed that personal trial, error, and empirical evidence are the true foundations of wisdom. By describing wisdom as a daughter, he emphasizes that deep knowledge is naturally born from living through events and testing ideas yourself.

Written in Leonardo da Vinci's personal notebooks, compiled around 1490 and preserved in the Codex Trivulzianus. It reflects his core philosophy as a self-taught practitioner who valued empirical observation over medieval scholastic tradition.

People often hang this print in a study, home office, or workshop to encourage curiosity and learning through practical action.
