“Wer sein eigenes Leben und das seiner Mitmenschen als sinnlos empfindet, der ist nicht nur unglücklich, sondern auch kaum lebensfähig.”
“Whoever regards their own life and that of their fellow human beings as meaningless is not only unhappy, but hardly able to live at all.”

Words by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) — Theoretical physicist.

About this quote

Einstein suggests that finding purpose in existence is fundamental to human survival and emotional well-being. To view human life as entirely devoid of meaning leads to deep despair and makes daily living almost unbearable. He places equal weight on our own lives and those of others, implying that empathy and shared purpose are essential for sustained human flourishing.

This quote comes from Einstein's 1934 collection of writings, Mein Weltbild, translated into English as The World As I See It. It opens a short essay in which he reflects on human nature and the purpose of existence.

People often hang this print in a study or quiet library to encourage daily reflection on empathy and purpose.
