“Whoever possesses science and art also has religion; whoever possesses neither of the two, let him have religion.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

Goethe suggests that a deep engagement with science and art elevates the human spirit, providing the same awe, purpose, and reverence traditionally found in faith. For those who cultivate both disciplines, formal religion becomes redundant. However, for people without access to scientific knowledge or artistic expression, traditional religious belief remains essential, offering moral direction, comfort, and a connection to something greater than themselves.

This epigram appears in Goethe’s *Zahme Xenien* (Tame Xenias), a collection of short philosophical verses published in the 1820s. It reflects his late belief in the spiritual dimension of creative and rational pursuits.
