Над кем смеётесь? Над собою смеётесь! — Nikolai Gogol | Printable Wall Art

“Над кем смеётесь? Над собою смеётесь!”
“Who are you laughing at? You're laughing at yourselves!”

Words by Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) — Author of Dead Souls and The Government Inspector.

About this quote

This iconic line breaks the fourth wall to turn the mirror back on the audience. While viewers laugh at the absurd greed, vanity, and corruption of the characters on stage, the speaker reminds them that these flaws belong to society as a whole. It serves as a sharp reminder that satire exposes human failings shared by everyone, including the observer.

The line comes from Nikolai Gogol's famous 1836 satirical play, The Government Inspector. It is spoken by the Mayor directly to the audience when his small town's widespread corruption and foolishness are finally exposed.

People often hang this print in a study or home office as a humorous reminder of human absurdity.
