When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow… — Peter Marshall | Printable Wall Art

“When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds.”

Words by Peter Marshall (1902-1949) — Scottish-American preacher.

About this quote

This quotation suggests that hardship is essential for personal growth. Rather than wishing for an easy life free from trouble, we should recognise that adversity builds resilience, character, and inner strength. Just as a tree develops deeper roots and tougher timber when battling harsh winds, human beings often develop their finest qualities through enduring difficult times.

Peter Marshall was a Scottish-born Presbyterian minister who served as Chaplain of the United States Senate in the late 1940s. The line comes from one of his published prayers, reflecting his traditional Christian perspective on coping with adversity.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to offer steady encouragement during demanding work.
