圍師必闕 — Sun Tzu | Printable Wall Art

“圍師必闕”
“When surrounding an enemy, always leave an outlet.”

Words by Sun Tzu (544 BC-496 BC) — Ancient Chinese general and military strategist.

About this quote

This principle advises against trapping an opponent completely. When people or enemies feel trapped with no hope of escape, they fight with desperate, relentless intensity. Leaving a perceived way out reduces their desire to fight to the death, allowing you to control the situation, minimise your own losses, and achieve victory more efficiently without driving the adversary to extreme measures.

This instruction originates from Chapter Seven of The Art of War, an ancient Chinese military treatise attributed to the strategist Sun Tzu. Written during the Eastern Zhou period, the work remains one of history's most influential texts on strategy and conflict management.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage thoughtful, strategic thinking during daily decisions.
