When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the… — Audre Lorde | Printable Wall Art

“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”

Words by Audre Lorde (1934-1992) — Poet and civil-rights activist.

About this quote

Lorde reflects on overcoming fear by focusing on a higher purpose. She suggests that fear does not disappear when we act with conviction; rather, it loses its power over us. When personal strength is directed towards a meaningful goal or vision, taking action becomes essential, rendering self-doubt and fear secondary to the larger cause at hand.

This passage appears in Lorde's 1980 book The Cancer Journals. Written following her diagnosis of breast cancer, the text explores survival, identity, and the necessity of speaking out despite illness, uncertainty, and fear.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage boldness and purpose during difficult projects.
