天將降大任於斯人也，必先苦其心志 — Mencius | Printable Wall Art

“天將降大任於斯人也，必先苦其心志”
“When Heaven is about to place a great burden on a person, it first tests their resolve through hardship.”

Words by Mencius (372 BC-289 BC) — Confucian philosopher, 'Second Sage' of Confucianism.

About this quote

This passage suggests that severe trials are not random misfortunes, but necessary preparation for significant responsibility. Enduring physical, mental, and emotional hardship builds the resilience, character, and wisdom required to handle great duties. Rather than seeing suffering as a setback, the text encourages viewing adversity as a deliberate process that strengthens a person's resolve and sharpens their capacity to achieve meaningful goals.

It comes from the Mencius, a foundational Confucian text recorded during the Warring States period in China. Attributed to the philosopher Mencius in the fourth century BC, the passage remains one of his most celebrated reflections on personal growth.

People often hang this quote in a home study or office to maintain focus during challenging endeavours.
