About this quote

Spoken as a gentle consolation after a life of hardship, this line captures a profound longing for peace. It suggests that unrewarded labour and sorrow in this life will eventually give way to serenity, beauty, and grace. Chekhov offers a vision of quiet hope, reminding us that even the heaviest burdens will one day be lifted into quiet rest.

Anton Chekhov wrote these words for his 1898 play, Uncle Vanya. Sonya speaks the line in the final scene to comfort her exhausted uncle, offering solace after years of wearying labour.

People often place this print beside the bed to offer comfort and quiet reflection at the end of the day.
