Мы почитаем всех нулями, а единицами — себя — Alexander Pushkin | Printable Wall Art

“Мы почитаем всех нулями, а единицами — себя”
“We regard everyone else as ciphers, and only ourselves as ones”

Words by Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) — Russian poet, author of Eugene Onegin.

About this quote

This line observes the human tendency towards vanity and self-importance. We naturally view ourselves as significant individuals, represented by the number one, while reducing everyone else to worthless zeros. Pushkin captures how easily ego blinds us to the value of others, offering a sharp critique of social arrogance and personal bias.

The line comes from Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, published between 1825 and 1832. It appears in the second chapter as a commentary on the cynical social attitudes of nineteenth-century Russian aristocracy.

People often hang this in a home study or library as a wry reminder to maintain humility.
