Il faut cultiver notre jardin. — Voltaire | Printable Wall Art

“Il faut cultiver notre jardin.”
“We must cultivate our garden.”

Words by Voltaire (1694-1778) — French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, and satirist.

About this quote

This phrase encourages practical action and personal responsibility over endless philosophical debating. Voltaire suggests that rather than worrying about the vast problems of the world or seeking perfect answers, we should focus on our own immediate environment, work, and community. By tending to our own small patch, we find purpose, peace, and meaningful achievement in an unpredictable world.

It is the final line of Voltaire’s 1759 satirical novella, Candide. Written during the Enlightenment, the story critiques extreme optimism and urges practical effort over idle speculation.

People often hang this quote in a home office or garden room to encourage steady, mindful focus.
