“We must accept our existence as fully as it can possibly be done; everything, even the unprecedented, must be possible within it.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke encourages us to embrace life in its entirety, including the strange, unexpected, and unsettling moments. Instead of retreating from difficult emotions or strange circumstances, we ought to allow space for them. True courage lies in remaining open to whatever existence presents, trusting that even the unprecedented can broaden our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

This passage comes from Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, a collection of correspondence written between 1902 and 1908 to the military cadet Franz Xaver Kappus, offering profound reflections on art, solitude, and human courage.

People often hang this print in a quiet study or personal reading nook to encourage daily courage and reflection.
