Con la iglesia hemos topado, Sancho. — Miguel de Cervantes | Printable Wall Art

“Con la iglesia hemos topado, Sancho.”
“We have come up against the church, Sancho.”

Words by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) — Spanish novelist, author of Don Quixote.

About this quote

This phrase describes encountering a powerful, entrenched institution or authority that is difficult to challenge or bypass. Today, it serves as a wry observation about hitting an immovable wall of bureaucracy or dogma. It suggests that some power structures are so formidable that direct confrontation is unwise, advising a pragmatic approach when facing established authority.

The line comes from Part II of Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, published in 1615. Searching for Dulcinea's palace in the dark, Quixote literally runs into the village church building, giving the remark both physical and metaphorical weight.

People often hang this in a home office or study as a humorous reminder of life's bureaucratic hurdles.
