Wir sind die Bienen des Unsichtbaren. — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Wir sind die Bienen des Unsichtbaren.”
“We are the bees of the invisible.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke suggests that human beings gather experiences from the physical world and transform them into internal, spiritual meaning. Just as bees collect nectar from flowers to make honey, we gather memories, sights, and feelings to create an invisible realm of thought, art, and memory. It is a poetic view of human consciousness as an active, creative force.

This phrase appears in a letter Rilke wrote to his Polish translator, Witold Hulewicz, in November 1925. In the letter, he explained the deeper spiritual meaning behind his famous poem cycle, the Duino Elegies.

People often hang this print in a study or creative studio to inspire quiet thought and artistic work.
