We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but… — George Bernard Shaw | Printable Wall Art

“We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future.”

Words by George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) — Irish playwright and Nobel laureate.

About this quote

True wisdom relies on more than simply remembering what has already happened. While past experience offers lessons, genuine maturity comes from looking ahead and taking active ownership of what comes next. Shaw suggests that accepting responsibility for our future choices shapes our character and guides intelligent action far more effectively than merely dwelling on history.

This line appears in George Bernard Shaw's 1921 play, Back to Methuselah. Written in the aftermath of the First World War, the work explores human longevity, evolution, and the urgent need for humanity to take deliberate control of its own destiny.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage focus on future goals and personal accountability.
