“죽는 날까지 하늘을 우러러 한 점 부끄럼이 없기를”
“Until the day I die, may I have not one speck of shame as I look up at the sky.”

Words by Yun Dong-ju (1917-1945) — Poet who died in a Japanese prison; author of 'Sky, Wind, and Stars and Poems'.

About this quote

This line expresses a desire for absolute moral integrity and moral self-examination. Looking up at the sky symbolises seeking truth, while wishing for not a single speck of shame reflects a commitment to living with a pure conscience. It is a quiet, resolute vow to remain true to one's values despite personal hardship or oppression.

Written in November 1941, this line opens the prologue poem of Yun Dong-ju's posthumous collection, Sky, Wind, Stars and Poems. He wrote during the Japanese occupation of Korea, making it a poignant emblem of quiet moral resistance.

People often hang this print in a study or bedside area to encourage quiet personal reflection each day.
