Try to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud. — Maya Angelou | Printable Wall Art

“Try to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud.”

Words by Maya Angelou (1928-2014) — Poet and author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

About this quote

This phrase encourages us to bring hope, compassion, and positivity to people experiencing hardship. A cloud represents trouble or sorrow, while a rainbow brings unexpected warmth and light. Angelou reminds us that small acts of kindness do not require grand gestures; simply choosing to support others in their dark moments can transform their outlook and lighten their burden.

Maya Angelou shared this message in her 2008 book, Letter to My Daughter, and frequently repeated it in talks. She credited the idea to an old 19th-century African American song that inspired her own outlook on life.

People often hang this print in a hallway or classroom to offer visitors and students a daily reminder of kindness.
