Trendy is the last stage before tacky. — Karl Lagerfeld | Printable Wall Art

“Trendy is the last stage before tacky.”

Words by Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) — German fashion designer, creative director of Chanel.

About this quote

This observation warns against following fleeting fashions too closely. When a style becomes intensely trendy, it is on the verge of being overdone, losing its original charm and turning cheap or vulgar. True elegance relies on timeless qualities rather than passing novelties. Adopting every current fad leaves little room for personal discernment, making bad taste the inevitable next step.

Karl Lagerfeld was famous for his sharp observations on style. This aphorism featured in various fashion interviews and books collecting his sharp-witted remarks, capturing his belief that timeless design always triumphs over brief, superficial trends.

People often hang this print in dressing rooms or creative studios as a light-hearted reminder to favour timeless style.
