Suchen heißt: ein Ziel haben. Finden aber heißt: frei sein, offen stehen… — Hermann Hesse | Printable Wall Art

“Suchen heißt: ein Ziel haben. Finden aber heißt: frei sein, offen stehen, kein Ziel haben.”
“To seek means to have a goal. But to find means to be free, to stand open, to have no goal.”

Words by Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) — German-Swiss novelist and poet.

About this quote

Seeking implies a narrow focus on a pre-conceived goal, which can blind a person to other truths. Finding requires letting go of specific targets, remaining open to whatever arrives, and experiencing true spiritual freedom. Real wisdom comes when we stop searching with rigid expectations and simply allow ourselves to perceive life as it is.

This line comes from Hermann Hesse's 1922 philosophical novel Siddhartha. Near the end of the book, the protagonist explains the difference between obsession with a goal and genuine enlightenment to his companion Govinda.

People often hang this print in a study or quiet workspace to encourage open-minded focus over rigid ambition.
