“Liebhaben von Mensch zu Mensch: das ist vielleicht das Schwerste, was uns aufgegeben ist.”
“To love, from person to person: that is perhaps the most difficult thing we are given to do.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke frames love not as a simple emotion or effortless romance, but as the supreme human task. True love between individuals requires immense maturity, patience, and self-knowledge. It is not something we fall into casually; rather, it is a quiet discipline that challenges us to grow, respect another person's individuality, and undertake the hard work of genuine connection.

This line comes from Rilke's seventh letter in Letters to a Young Poet, written in 1904 to Franz Xaver Kappus. Published posthumously in 1929, the collection offers thoughtful reflections on art, solitude, and relationships.

People often hang this in a bedroom or study as a gentle reminder of the effort genuine love requires.
