To be, or not to be, that is the question. — William Shakespeare | Printable Wall Art

“To be, or not to be, that is the question.”

Words by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) — Playwright and poet, author of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.

About this quote

Prince Hamlet contemplates the fundamental choice between enduring the hardships of life or ending them through death. He reflects on whether it is braver to suffer life's inevitable troubles or to actively choose non-existence. The underlying idea addresses human vulnerability, the fear of what follows death, and the universal struggle to find purpose when faced with suffering.

This soliloquy appears in Act 3, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, written around 1600. It is spoken by Prince Hamlet as he reflects on mortality, grief, and the weight of his moral duties.

People often hang this in a quiet study or library to inspire deep thought and quiet personal reflection.
