Être un saint, c'est l'exception ; être un juste, c'est la règle. — Victor Hugo | Printable Wall Art

“Être un saint, c'est l'exception ; être un juste, c'est la règle.”
“To be a saint is the exception; to be righteous is the rule.”

Words by Victor Hugo (1802-1885) — French novelist, poet, and playwright.

About this quote

This line distinguishes between heroic perfection and everyday morality. Exceptional holiness is rare and beyond most people, but basic moral decency, honesty, and fairness are reasonable expectations for everyone. Hugo suggests that while we cannot all achieve sainthood, living a just and ethical life is a daily standard we ought to meet. It encourages steady goodness over unattainable perfection.

The line appears in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, Les Misérables. It forms part of a reflection on the character Bishop Myriel, whose practical morality emphasises attainable human goodness over impossible spiritual perfection.

People often hang this print in a home office or hallway as a quiet daily reminder of practical integrity.
