To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not… — Leonard Bernstein | Printable Wall Art

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.”

Words by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) — American composer and conductor of West Side Story.

About this quote

Creativity requires both structure and urgency. A plan gives clear direction, whilst a strict deadline forces quick decision-making and prevents overthinking. Without time constraints, good ideas often stall in endless refinement. Bernstein suggests that a touch of pressure turns ambition into action, compelling us to focus, trust our instincts, and deliver finished work.

Bernstein said this in November 1963 during a speech following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He urged artists to respond to violence by creating music more passionately and productively than ever before.

People often hang this in a home office or creative studio to encourage focus and steady progress.
