'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved… — Alfred, Lord Tennyson | Printable Wall Art

“'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”

Words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) — Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom.

About this quote

The pain of losing a loved one, or experiencing heartbreak, is far preferable to living a life shielded from affection entirely. Love alters human experience for the better, bestowing depth, warmth, and memory. Even when grief or sadness follows, the emotional richness gained from loving another person far outweighs the safe emptiness of a heart that never takes a risk.

The line appears in section 27 of Tennyson's 1850 elegy In Memoriam A.H.H. He wrote the lengthy poem over seventeen years to process his profound grief following the sudden death of his close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam.

People often hang this print in a bedroom or quiet sitting area, offering daily comfort during reflective moments.
