Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen werfen — German Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen werfen”
“Those who sit in a glasshouse shouldn't throw stones.”

A traditional German saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This proverb warns against criticising others when you share similar faults or vulnerabilities. A glasshouse is fragile, so throwing a stone invites retaliatory damage to your own home. It encourages self-awareness and humility, reminding us to examine our own shortcomings before judging the behaviour of those around us, lest our own flaws be exposed.

This traditional German proverb shares roots with similar sayings across Europe, including Chaucer's medieval English texts. While its exact origins remain unrecorded, the glasshouse imagery gained widespread popularity in printed collections of idiomatic wisdom during the early modern period.

People often hang this in a home office or hallway as a humorous daily reminder to practise grace.
