There is only one boss. The customer. — Sam Walton | Printable Wall Art

“There is only one boss. The customer.”

Words by Sam Walton (1918-1992) — Founder of Walmart.

About this quote

This statement highlights the ultimate source of power in any business. Regardless of titles, managers, or corporate hierarchies, a company exists solely to serve its patrons. If customers choose to spend their money elsewhere, everyone from the chief executive to the frontline staff loses their job. Success depends entirely on prioritising the needs and satisfaction of the people buying the service.

Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, used this phrase to instil a customer-first philosophy across his retail empire. It features prominently in discussions of his business principles from the late twentieth century and remains a classic corporate maxim.

People often hang this print in modern offices or staff breakrooms to remind teams of their shared priority.
