Il y a dans la jalousie plus d'amour-propre que d'amour. — François de La Rochefoucauld | Printable Wall Art

“Il y a dans la jalousie plus d'amour-propre que d'amour.”
“There is more self-love than love in jealousy.”

Words by François de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) — French moralist and writer of maxims.

About this quote

This maxim suggests that jealousy stems primarily from vanity and possessiveness rather than genuine affection. When people feel jealous, they are usually more concerned with their own wounded pride, status, or fear of loss than with the well-being of the person they claim to love. La Rochefoucauld highlights how self-interest often disguises itself as deep romantic devotion.

This line appears as Maxim 325 in La Rochefoucauld's Maximes, first published in 1665. The French noble wrote these sharp observations on human nature and ego during the reign of Louis XIV.

People often hang this print in a personal study or dressing room as a witty, psychological reminder about ego.
