Der Schoß ist fruchtbar noch, aus dem das kroch. — Bertolt Brecht | Printable Wall Art

“Der Schoß ist fruchtbar noch, aus dem das kroch.”
“The womb from which that crawled is still fertile.”

Words by Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) — German playwright and poet.

About this quote

Brecht warns that the defeat of a tyrant does not eliminate the threat of tyranny itself. The social, economic, and political conditions that allowed fascism to flourish remain present in society. It serves as a reminder that hatred and authoritarianism can easily resurface, requiring constant vigilance, critical thought, and active opposition from citizens to prevent history from repeating its worst mistakes.

This line forms the final warning in Bertolt Brecht's 1941 satirical play, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Written in exile during the Second World War, the allegory addresses the rise of fascism and totalitarian power in Europe.

People often hang this in a home study or hallway as a quiet, thought-provoking reminder of civic responsibility.
