“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.”

Words by Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) — British philosopher, logician, and Nobel laureate.

About this quote

Critical thinking leads to nuance and self-doubt, whereas ignorance often breeds unshakeable confidence. Fanatics act without hesitation because they ignore complexity, while wise people hesitate because they recognise nuance. Russell points out that global affairs are too often directed by loud, dogmatic voices, simply because thoughtful people are more aware of their own limitations and the subtleties of truth.

Bertrand Russell wrote this line in his 1933 essay, 'The Triumph of Stupidity', later published in Mortals and Others. It reflected his concern over the rise of authoritarian political movements and dogmatism in interwar Europe.

People often hang this in a home office or study to encourage quiet reflection, humility, and open-minded thinking.
