“The soul that has no established aim loses itself; for as they say, to be everywhere is to be nowhere.”

Words by Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) — French Renaissance philosopher and essayist.

About this quote

This line reflects on the importance of focus and purpose. Without a clear goal, our thoughts and energies become scattered, leading to a sense of drifting aimlessly. Attempting to engage with everything at once prevents us from truly committing to anything. Montaigne suggests that setting a firm direction grounds the mind, helping us channel our efforts into meaningful achievements rather than wasting potential.

This passage appears in Michel de Montaigne's essay On Idleness, published in 1580. Reflecting on his retirement from public life, the French philosopher explored how an undisciplined mind requires a clear focus to prevent it from wandering into confusion.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage focus and intentional daily planning.
