The soul that has no established aim loses itself. — Michel de Montaigne | Printable Wall Art

“The soul that has no established aim loses itself.”

Words by Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) — French Renaissance philosopher and essayist.

About this quote

This observation suggests that human minds require direction to function well. Without a clear purpose or long-term focus, our thoughts drift into distraction and confusion. Setting a definite goal gives shape to our daily efforts, keeping us grounded and mentally disciplined. Ultimately, intention prevents us from wasting our energy on aimless thoughts and keeps our inner life coherent.

The line comes from Michel de Montaigne's essay On Idleness, published in his 1580 collection Essays. The French Renaissance philosopher argued that an idle mind, lacking a specific aim, naturally generates chaotic and foolish ideas.
