About this quote

This classic saying warns that individuals who stand out from the crowd often face criticism, pressure, or conformity from the group. It reflects a traditional emphasis on social harmony and collective unity. Today, it is frequently cited both as a cautionary note on public scrutiny and as a reminder of the courage required to express one's true individuality.

This traditional Japanese folk proverb, known as a kotowaza, has no specific author or origin date. It has circulated for generations across Japan as a familiar observation on societal norms, social structure, and personal conduct.
