The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born. — Warren Bennis | Printable Wall Art

“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born.”

Words by Warren Bennis (1925-2014) — Leadership scholar and author.

About this quote

This statement challenges the belief that leadership is an inherent trait passed down through genetics. Bennis argues that leaders are made rather than born, developing their skills through experience, self-reflection, and practice. Assuming leadership cannot be taught is harmful because it discourages people from taking responsibility and prevents capable individuals from pursuing growth.

Written by American scholar Warren Bennis, a pioneer in modern leadership studies. He expressed this principle in his influential 1989 book, On Becoming a Leader, which argued that personal development is essential to effective guidance.

People often hang this in a home office or study as an encouraging reminder to embrace personal growth.
