The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes… — Marcus Aurelius | Printable Wall Art

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Words by Marcus Aurelius (121-180) — Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher.

About this quote

This core Stoic idea suggests that obstacles should not halt our progress, but rather define the path forward. Instead of viewing a setback as a barrier, we can use it as raw material to build resilience, adapt, and grow. Whatever tries to block us simply becomes the very thing that drives our next action.

Written by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in his private personal journals during the second century. These writings were later collected and published as Meditations, serving as a guide to Stoic self-discipline and leadership.

People often hang this print in a home study or workspace to stay motivated during difficult projects.
