Das Gute – dieser Satz steht fest – ist stets das Böse… — Wilhelm Busch | Printable Wall Art

“Das Gute – dieser Satz steht fest – ist stets das Böse, was man lässt.”
“The good – this much is certain – is always the bad that one refrains from.”

Words by Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908) — German poet and illustrator, creator of Max und Moritz.

About this quote

This humorous line offers a playful take on morality. Busch suggests that doing good is not necessarily about performing grand, heroic acts. Instead, it is often simply the restraint shown when we choose not to do something bad. It highlights human flaws with gentle irony, reminding us that virtue can be as simple as avoiding temptation and keeping bad impulses in check.

The line appears in Wilhelm Busch's 1872 illustrated verse story, Die Fromme Helene. Busch was a renowned German poet and humorist whose satirical picture stories laid the groundwork for modern comic strips.

People often hang this print in a study or hallway for a humorous, daily reminder of human nature.
