The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to… — Soren Kierkegaard | Printable Wall Art

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”

Words by Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) — Danish philosopher, father of existentialism.

About this quote

This quotation shifts the focus of prayer away from asking for external favours or trying to alter divine intentions. Instead, it suggests that true prayer works inwardly. By opening oneself up in contemplation, the person praying undergoes a personal transformation, gaining greater humility, clarity, and spiritual alignment. The purpose is not to bargain with the divine, but to reshape one's own heart and perspective.

Written by the nineteenth-century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, a central figure in Christian existentialism. The thought reflects his broader writings on personal faith, where he consistently emphasised individual inwardness and genuine self-examination over rigid dogma or public ritual.

People often hang this in a quiet study or bedside area to encourage daily reflection and personal mindfulness.
