Los cuatro puntos cardinales son tres: el Norte y el Sur. — Federico García Lorca | Printable Wall Art

“Los cuatro puntos cardinales son tres: el Norte y el Sur.”
“The four cardinal points are three: the North and the South.”

Words by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) — Poet and playwright.

About this quote

This witty remark subverts ordinary logic to show how poetry operates beyond rigid facts. By stating that four points are actually three, then listing only two, Lorca plays with numbers and directions to highlight the playful nature of creative thought. It reminds us that art does not need to follow strict arithmetic, inviting us to look at the world with imagination rather than literal precision.

The line reflects the surrealist humour of Federico García Lorca during the 1920s and 1930s. It circulated as a favourite playful aphorism among his avant-garde contemporaries in Spain before being collected in his broader works.

People often hang this in a study or creative studio to encourage playful thinking and unconventional ideas.
