The critic is not the one who counts; the credit belongs to… — Theodore Roosevelt | Printable Wall Art

“The critic is not the one who counts; the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.”

Words by Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) — 26th U.S. President.

About this quote

This passage reminds us that observers who judge others take no real risks. True honour belongs to those who strive, stumble, and try again in the face of failure. Action requires courage, whereas judgement requires none. Ultimately, trying and failing is far more commendable than remaining a passive bystander who never takes a chance.

Theodore Roosevelt delivered this line during a speech titled Citizenship in a Republic, given at the Sorbonne in Paris on 23 April 1910. The passage became widely known as The Man in the Arena.

People often hang this print in a home study or office to inspire resilience during difficult working tasks.
