The buck stops here. — Harry S. Truman | Printable Wall Art

“The buck stops here.”

Words by Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) — 33rd U.S. President.

About this quote

This phrase means that ultimate responsibility for a decision or outcome rests with the top leader, rather than being passed along to subordinates. Passing the buck means shifting blame or duty to someone else. The saying emphasises personal accountability, courage, and integrity in management, reminding leaders that they must accept final responsibility for whatever happens under their authority.

The expression originated in nineteenth-century poker, where a marker or buck was passed to track whose turn it was to deal. President Harry S. Truman famously kept a painted glass sign bearing this motto on his desk in the Oval Office.

People often hang this print in a study or home office to encourage decisive leadership and personal accountability.
