Задача художника не в том, чтобы решать вопросы, а в том, чтобы… — Anton Chekhov | Printable Wall Art

“Задача художника не в том, чтобы решать вопросы, а в том, чтобы правильно ставить вопросы”
“The artist's task is not to solve problems, but to pose them correctly”

Words by Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) — Playwright and short-story master, author of The Cherry Orchard.

About this quote

Anton Chekhov suggests that creative work should provoke thought rather than offer neat conclusions. A writer or painter serves society best by observing life honestly and framing its complexities clearly. By asking the right questions, the artist invites audiences to reflect deeply and seek their own answers, preserving the essential nuance and ambiguity of the human experience.

Chekhov expressed this view in an 1888 letter to his publisher Alexei Suvorin. Discussing the purpose of literature, he argued that a writer must remain an impartial witness rather than a moral judge or problem solver.

This print suits a home studio or quiet study where thoughtful contemplation and creative work take priority.
