“That was only a prelude; where they burn books, they will in the end also burn people.”

Words by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) — German Romantic poet and essayist.

About this quote

This warning suggests that destroying ideas is the first step towards destroying human life. When a society begins to censor, control, or burn literature, it strips away respect for human thought and dignity. Heine observed that disrespect for intellectual freedom naturally escalates into violence against people, making the suppression of books an ominous precursor to greater atrocities.

The line appears in Heinrich Heine's 1821 tragedy, Almansor. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, the dialogue reflects on Christian forces burning the Koran, serving as a prophetic reflection on intolerance in European history.

People often display this quote in a study or library to honour intellectual freedom and the importance of literature.
