Dass etwas schwer ist, muss ein Grund mehr sein, es zu tun. — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Dass etwas schwer ist, muss ein Grund mehr sein, es zu tun.”
“That something is difficult must be one more reason to do it.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

This line suggests that difficulty is not a reason to turn away, but a sign that an effort is worthwhile. Rilke believed that personal growth and true understanding come from facing hard tasks rather than seeking comfort. When we choose the difficult path, we engage more deeply with life, turning challenges into opportunities for inner transformation and self-discovery.

It appears in Rilke’s collection Letters to a Young Poet, written between 1902 and 1908. Writing to Franz Xaver Kappus, Rilke reflected on love, solitude, and creative work, encouraging the young writer to embrace life’s difficult tasks.

People often hang this in a home office or study to encourage perseverance during demanding work.
