“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.”

Words by Bill Gates (1955-) — Co-founder of Microsoft.

About this quote

Winning can make people overconfident. When things go well, smart individuals often assume their judgment is flawless and ignore the role of luck or changing circumstances. This mindset stops them from questioning their methods or preparing for future challenges. The quote reminds us that real learning happens through setbacks and critical reflection, not just from easy victories.

Bill Gates included this observation in his 1995 book, The Road Ahead. Writing during Microsoft's rapid expansion, he reflected on the dangers of complacency in business and technology.

People often hang this in home offices or workspaces to stay humble, focused, and adaptable during prosperous times.
