Staat heißt das kälteste aller kalten Ungeheuer. — Friedrich Nietzsche | Printable Wall Art

“Staat heißt das kälteste aller kalten Ungeheuer.”
“State is the name of the coldest of all cold monsters.”

Words by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) — German philosopher.

About this quote

Nietzsche warns that the modern state is an unfeeling institution that strips away individual identity. Unlike genuine culture, which grows naturally from human creativity, the state relies on cold authority and conformity. It pretends to speak for the people, yet it serves only its own power, treating citizens as nameless tools rather than unique individuals.

This line appears in Nietzsche's 1883 philosophical work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in the chapter titled 'On the New Idol'. Here, the prophet Zarathustra warns against worshipping government power over personal freedom and spiritual independence.

People often hang this quote in a home study or library as a reminder to value independent thought.
